The evolutionary cycle is continuously growing. It takes a few millenia for evolution to take a leap forward, but currently, Science is taking evolution into it's own hands.
Scientists are experiment all over the world to try and genetically engineer mutants to fight against the current mutant populace to try and wipe them out, with generous compensation from the government. These mutants will be controlled by the government, and if needed, will wipe out anyone they suspect to be a mutant.
Some mutants are known. Mutants like Jean Grey, Charles Xavier, Wolverine, Storm and Beast, as well as Magneto and Mystique from the Brotherhood. These mutants are the first to be targeted, yet still the X-Men and Brotherhood do not see eye to eye on the matter.
