"Fairies?" Nix repeated.
She'd said every little thing was made of fairies. Hmm. What an odd statement. He was fairly certain that he wasn't made of such, and he was certainly alive. Or maybe he was being to literal?
He closed his eyes for a second, letting their music come to him. It sounded....strange....ethereal...beautiful. He doubted he'd heard such sounds from any other, non-avian, creature in his lifetime. Though humans came close, at times.
He hard a hard time believing someone could hurt such creatures like Laurel had describes. Knowingly, at least. He knew that made disrupted the ecosystem all the time, without realizing what they were doing half the time, in their quest to control everything around them. He never liked the fact, but when it was an honest mistake he could at least pity them. Their could be a chance of forgiveness for the offending party down the road.
"Why would such Majestic beings be shy?" Nix asked of her.

"Because fairies only have a little power. They are all but helpless against the world outside the thing that they reside in." Laurel smiled slightly. She knew that feeling well. Helplessness, powerlessness. She was both, easily. The only powers she possessed were the power to give life to the earth, and to turn invisible when danger was near. She had no real power whatsoever.
"They are also quite small... most are no bigger than this finger," to demonstrate their size she held up her left hand, pinkie finger extended for him to see. "It makes them quite scared little things..."
Biting her lip she paused, listening to the soft melody thoughtfully. She wondered... Nix had proven himself to her, but... would she dare to reveal all the secrets that the Gods had hidden from the world? "Few know of the existence of these fairies," she murmured. "And fewer still have ever glimpsed them." Her eyes curious she stared at him. "Do you... wish to see them?"

Nix nodded, showing that he understood. Yes, that would indeed make sense. Those of smaller stature and power usually had to band together in order to survive in nature. Examples like that could be found all over the place, like a school of salmon or a flock of penguins. He could see why the fairies would be wary around beings of much greater size and level, particularly if those greater beings commonly cut the fairies for any number of god-forsaken reasons.
Nix looked up, a little shocked, when Laurel asked him if he would like to see the fairies. This had to mean that she truly trusted him, a creature of fire, not to cause harm to the fairies of this forest in amy way. Nix's facial features lit up in a fiery, blush.
"I..I would be honored to. I've never seen a fairy before so I admit I am most curious as to what they are like. Besides, I simply must meet the makers of this music face-to-face, if only to applaud their efforts."
He was held back by the realization that, in his present state, the fairies could very well want little to do with him. He could easily appear threatening to the peaceful folk. Hmm.......hmmm....how to fix that...
'That.....might just work!', he thought to himself. He then concentrated, focusing his powers internally, so as not to startle anyone with another, sudden flash of fire, as he'd done to change into his human-like form. After a few minutes the changes began, starting with feathers flowing down and around his arms and body, the thin wings on his back merging with his skin again, his feet turning back into razor-sharp talons, and his mouth and nose morphing into a fierce looking beak. His eyes also changed into the laser-sharp eyes commonly featured with the Bald Eagle.
Though, he didn't stop with just turning back into his Phoenix-Mode. He began to rapidly shrink in size, nothing changing but his height. He kept going, dropping down more and more feet, until he was about the size of a turtle-dove; easily able to fit in one's hand. He fly up to Laurel and landed on her shoulder.
"Perhaps they'll find me less frightening, now?"

"Perhaps they will," agreed Laurel, although she also believed that the fairies might prefer to see him as he really was, not a modified version that he believed would suit them better. But the perhaps she was wrong and they would prefer him this way. They may be less intimidated by him when he was this size and form... She honestly was not sure she knew them well enough to actually judge what they thought. During her long life she had met few of the fairies. They were afraid of even her, who was a guardian of the forest almost in the same way they were. Except it was her job to keep them safe, something she had failed to do several times. She always managed to give new life to the things in the forest that died, but even then, the fairies that lived in those lush plants were not the same ones that had been there before. The original ones died with the plant life the first time, and could not be reborn. If she were stronger.... No. Laurel shook her head. There was no point in thinking that way. Smiling she went over to the tall willow that was her favorite place to sit and watch the moon. Once she stood in front of it she placed a hand gently on the bark of the magnificent tree and closed her eyes. "Spirits that live in this tree...show yourselves to me. I vow no harm will come to thee when in my presence." Her words were soft and gentle, kind. After a moment a faint green glow came from the tree, and out popped a few small glowing lights. The balls of green light, upon closer examination, were indeed little creatures, human-like in appearance, with wings on their little backs. They fluttered about the pair curiously, in a timid fashion, examining both of the guardians. {{OOC: An example of a forest fairy: Link}}

Nix partly felt wondered if it'd been a mistake to appear as he had. True, he didn't look to horribly frightening now, but he also didn't look too much like himself. Though, it was in a Phoenix's nature to disguise themselves and hide amongst the populace, without their secret being found out. There were no problems there. No, it was mainly the art of deception he was having a bit of trouble with. He didn't know if the fairies would since this wasn't his true form and, if they could, he didn't know if they'd be more or less annoyed for it.
'Ah well,' Nix thought. 'No point in going back now.'
Nix looked up as Laurel began a chant to summon the fairies. Her hand was warm and he was nestled, snugly, into it. Being held so gently by so tender and beautiful a Guardian was quite possibly one of the most intimate experiences he'd ever had, and it caused him to blush, softly. But, this was no time for his darker and more perverted side to be driving his thoughts.
'What...on Earth?'
Nix blinked slowly, his eyes wide in awe, and scanned the skies; his head watching closely the tiny creatures, made seemingly of light, that were flitting about him and Laurel. He was sure the fairies were examining them just as closely as Nix was to the fairies.
'Human-like shape.....tiny physique....minute wings....definite genders....'
Nix spoke up then, his voice like the gentle coo of a butterfly. "Fairies. Most majestic of beings. I am honored that you have appeared before us, such strangers to you and your customs, in such a show of courage and respect. I only ask that you spare a few minutes of your time, so that we may learn more about you."

Laurel smiled knowingly as she gently stroked Nix's feathers. She knew the fairies wouldn't respond in the way he thought. Actually, she had no idea what he thought, she realized. For all she knew he believed the fairies would start chattering away like a chipmunk. The mental image of one of the petite spirits talking like a chipmunk popped into her mind and she couldn't help the giggle that bubbled to her lips.
A fairy that had flown a little too close to her jumped back a few feet, startled. The green haired woman bowed her head in apology, a faint red flush on her cheeks. She hadn't meant to startle the poor thing.
Another fairy, a more brave one, fluttered down to the phoenix's level and cocked his head to the side in question. Laurel smiled. "Fairies do not speak the way we do," she explained, her voice lowered to a gentle murmur. "They can only communicate with us in gestures... Is that right?" The fairy nodded so she pressed on. "He says that he will do his best to answer any questions you may have regarding them, though."
