Beaches had always held appeal to Yuna, though she knew not why. She had always loved the sound of the ocean, the warm sand, and how beautiful the water became at sunset and sunrise. She remembered once when she was a little girl, she had found a small stone shaped like a heart. She had run home with it and shown her mother. Her mother knew of course, as she did now, that there was nothing really special about the stone at all. However, at the time, her mother had acted as though Yuna had found one of the most precious items in the world. Yuna had treasured that stone, carrying it around with her for the next twenty years or so, before she had finally lost it.
Now that she looked back on it, that was just silly. She had had such an irrational attachment to that stone, though it had been nothing more than that. There hadn't been anything special about it. Thinking about it now, she tried to picture the rock in her mind. She smiled slightly as she remembered it's shape, and the feel of it in her hand. It hadn't even been heart shaped--it had only seemed that way at the time.
A heart... she smirked slightly. She had thought that her own heart had died at about the same time that she had lost that stone. It had been her final reminder of happier times, of times when she was with her family, and still carefree. That had been almost five hundred years before. And then... she had had the misfortune, or perhaps the fortune, she wasn't quite sure which, to meet the demon Naraku. He had awakened feelings within her that she didn't know that she was capable of feeling. She had had a child with him, who she also loved dearly. She knew that she would give her life to save either of them, and that scared her.
She had always been so selfish; until she fell in love with Naraku. She hadn't known at the time when she mated with him that he had a mate already. By the time she knew that she was in love with him, she had met his other mate, Akina, whom Naraku also loved. The demoness was beautiful, that was for sure. And she was a true demoness, truly fitting to be a queen. Yuna wasn't even a demon by birth, though she was one now. The former priestess just wasn't sure any longer if she could continue with how things had been these past few weeks. Could she continue to pretend that nothing was bothering her? The past few days she had avoided Naraku entirely, not even sure what she would say to him if she did see him.
Breathing a sigh, she lay back on the warm sand and closed her eyes. She had to come up with something soon...
