The warmth of the fireplace, the to-and-fro motion of the waitresses tending to customers, and the droning chatter of travelers and drunkards took over the whole room. It was quite late, and the moon shone behind the jagged tangles of branches while the sky was a pure navy, morose color. It conflicted with the glow of the fires and candles that illuminated the whole lobby of the Kyûbi Inn, but it added to the quaintly serene feeling he was recieving from just being here.
The explosives expert was sitting at the bar, sipping generous amounts of sake out of a wooden mug with a metal handle. So far, this was only third cup. He hadn't the muse to drink more, but tipped the bartender a bronze token or two from his pocket. He wasn't drunk, per say. Just a little buzzed. He turned around and folded his arms on top of the back of the chair, observing what was going on in the inn. He blew some of his dirty-blonde hair out of the way of his eyes, and sighed.
He was a little more than just bored; he felt lonely. He didn't talk to anyone in the tavern yet, save the owner, the Fox-Demon named Tokala. It wasn't that hard getting here, since he was the kind of person who could handle asking complete strangers for directions with a smile. But it was hard for him to talk to such strange people in such a place. Not a single person he saw was decent or appealing to him.
A waitress with a teasing giggle had winked at him earlier, but she was one of the millions of girls who would chatter at one hundred words per second. To him, she was just another copy of the girls she was serving; no differences noted except their appearances. He "Hmphed," a sound of annoyance and rolled his eyes. He lost his appetite.
Lux turned his attention to the windows outside, finding it more interesting than the people around him. Fog began to creep and blur the outside world, and by the looks of it, rain clouds would be showering the place by tomorrow. The moon had risen significantly higher above the horizon since he had entered and chosen a room where he would spend the night. He didn't worry about his bag and other belongings; Tokala had given him the key.
He continued to stare out the window when he saw an intriguing change outside. Through the haze he could make out the shadow of a person walking towards the entrance of the inn. He waited for the door to creak open...

Lux's vision wasn't lying; there was indeed a figure approaching the cozy little inn, one with a glittering transparent cloak with spiderweb patterns and made of spidersilk. The figure was tiny, lithe, petite and obviously feminine. Although the hood was up, The face of the young woman was plainly visible, though there was nothing plain about it.
With high cheekbones and a heart-shaped face, the little demoness had pale, creamy skin and a set of pale pink lips curved into a crooked little smile. Perched above her cheekbones were large, curious, wolf-yellow eyes, and even paler gold around the pupils, and framing her eyes were thick, dark lashes. Arching gracefully over them were two thin black eyebrows.
A few ringlets of raven hair escaped the hood and surrounded the almost teenage-looking girl's features, bangs tumbling over her pale forehead. A slender hand reached up and pushed the door open lightly, allowing the beauty passage, a hush descending on the bar before lifting and the noise going straight to an all-time high. The woman rolled her eyes and glided over to a table, dropping her hood and unfastening her cloak, hanging it on the chair behind her as she sat down, revealing a fine, midnight blue ballgown[click].
Ordering a few shots of sake and some sushi and rice, the woman looked around herself, propping her head up with her hands, her elbows resting on the tabletop. Her curls of dark hair fell over her shoulders, back and neck, reaching down almost to her waist. It was a lot longer than she usually kept it, but she'd decided to grow it out a bit as of lately.
Scanning the crowds of people, her eyes fell upon a handsome boy with dishwater blond hair and a pair of goggles around his neck. She couldn't see the color of his eyes, even with her demon vision, but she knew he was watching her. 'Creepy stalker-ish dude in corner much...'

...The door swung open, and revealed the cloaked silhouette of a woman. He raised a brow, definitely intrigued by the girl, her attire, and her entrance. The ignorant hum of people resumed gradually after she rolled her eyes, and he noticed she had taken a seat at a table behind him. When she slipped off the cloak she wore, Lux sat up straight, picking up his chin from his hands that were clasped atop the back of the chair. He was taking in the look of the stranger in the beguiling dress.
She had a beautiful face, highlighted by gleaming eyes. Dark waves of hair trailed behind her whenever she whisked off in one direction, and they fell down in long, flowing wisps when she paused mid-stride. Lux himself was quite handsome too, though girls only saw his exterior, and almost always didn't care for what kept making incredibly explosive calculations between his ears. His eyes were a lovely hazel-green, constantly indecisive of whether to gaze this way or that. On top of that, Lux was fairly tall, in fact he stood well over six and a quarter feet.
The waitress took down her order in meticulous scribbles on a thin scrap of yellowed paper, and left in a hurried trot towards the kitchen. He debated whether or not to fly up to the girl and invite her to a conversation at her table, but remained hesitant.
Yes. No. Maybe so?
He played with the thought in his mind a bit, which kept him in an uneasy mood. It was almost always this way when he thought of girls.
First came the shyness...
Would she mind? He trodded over to her table, a kind expression on his lips.
Then came self hate...
Damnit! Say something, you moron! He opened his mouth to speak, barely finding his voice.
Last came first impressions.
"Is this seat taken?" He laid a gentle hand on the seat opposite the demoness at her table, still radiating the soft look on his face.

The dark-haired girl blinked as Lux approached, not moving at all except for her trailing gaze. She looked upon him in mild interest, and curiousity. He was blushing, which made her smirk and tilt her head cutely, and she quirked an eyebrow almost right after he thought, 'Would she mind?', and eyed him for a minute more after he actually spoke to raise the tension before answering with a nonchalant "Nope. Feel free~ I don't mind." and a wink.
Holy crap. This chick was good, almost as if she could read his mind. [echoing of the Twilight Zone themesong in background]. "In case you were wondering... I'm Syeira. You're... Lux, correct? Lux Haretsu?" Whoa. She was on fire.
She finally moved from her original position and flipped her hair over her shoulder with a fluid flick of her wrist, before she sat up straight and was served her sake and sushi. She smiled at the waitress in a sickly sweet kind of way when she snuck a peek at Lux, almost as if her thoughts were something Syeira had tasted and not liked. The waitress looked around, startled at something, before shaking her head and darting back off to take more orders.
Hmm. How odd.

...She shoots, she scores!
Both the wink and response surprised Lux, but he didn't fret about the good luck. He pulled out the chair from where it rested, and seated himself upon it. One of his arms propped his head up, while the other lay up on the table, half crossing his arms in a relaxed position.
Wow.
At the sound of his name, his eyes widened, and his face flushed another, more weak tone of pink, then receded as the waitress produced Syeira's order at the table. He knit his brows in an undecided manner when the waitress glanced at them both him. Once she whisked away to where she had come, he put two and two together immediately.
He offered a wolfish grin.
"Whoa. It's like you know exactly what I'm thinking, Syeria."
Yah-huh. That's right.
He was dumbstruck by the dead accuracy of her answers; he knew there could only be one possible explanation: she was a telepath, and although he wasn't 100%-on-the-dot betting his life that she was, he guessed it.
“So, mind telling me what brought you here in the first place?”
It was true. He wasn't quite smooth with introductions, he was normally quite klutzy and rough around the edges when he needed help with something. Perpetual awkwardness was apt to show up from time to time in his actions. It was his nature to be unpredictably explosive...

Syeira cocked her head. This one was quick to catch on. That, or a very good guesser. "That's because I do know what you are thinking. And everyone else in this room as well. So, yes, I am a telepath." She explained lightly, eating another piece of sushi calmly, followed by another delicate sip of sake.
"I was recently attending a large masquerade held by a neighboring lord, thus the dress and outfit. But all they had was expensive wine and roasted boar, therefore I left and came here, as I often do. Food and drink here is good." She continued, looking up at Lux with a grin. "Tokala has good taste." She added with a shrug, continuing to eat.
Syeira didn't purposely listen in on thoughts; actually, she preferred not the hear them at all as they tended to give her a headache when especially loud or in large numbers. She couldn't choose whether or not she heard them, and so she was stuck with a switch that had no off setting. But what she could do was ignore them or focus on particular ones. Actually, Lux's weren't as bad as she would've expected, although they all really revolved around her.
Finishing off another bite of raw fish, she absently examined the wooden chopsticks. They weren't anything special, no peculiar engravings. Not to the naked eye, anyways. But the whorls and lines of the wood were fascinating, and some even said they hid futuristic messages. Hmm. Might have to look that up sometime.

Lux temporarily mused about what it would be like, living your life hearing what other people were thinking all the time. He couldn't possibly stand it for more than a day or less. If it was the thoughts of people who had a higher rank than he did in social class, being ordered around and around, and around wasn't something he particularly liked. Neither was listening to dull, mundane behavior; the kind of chatter, endless debates and so-forth.
He imagined that all the surrounding thoughts picked up by your head would feel like just one goulash of a murr of low-pitched sounds and strong, irritatingly recurring voices. Mentally he pulled a strange face at the thought; the imaginary sound-goulash was all slightly perturbing to him. He kicked the thought out of his mind, for now.
And that was just a hunch I had, too. A bright, cheery expression lit up his face as he passed the thought to Syeira, despite the effect of the sake he drank earlier.
"A lord's masquerade? Sure sounds like it was pretty entertaining. But that's ahead of my class, though..." Lux's voice took leave and trailed off, hidden in the bustling net of commotion all around.
He glanced uneasily down at the floor as he said so, reminding himself that he was basically just another working-class boy. He was used to his life back at home in his Exploding Shack, which was located less than a league to the west of the once-populated territory Mr. Pimp Yourozoku.
His eyes darted back up to Syeira, and saw the same old waitress coming their way to serve food to a nearby table.
Psst. Wanna see something funny?
Quietly he unfastened the leather pouch on the right side of his belt, taking out a very small test tube filled with a clear liquid and topped off with a tiny cork. He hid the inch-long vial from view under the table. As the waitress came tra-la-lal-ing by, again taking a look at Lux and suspecting nothing, he flicked off the cork with the top of his thumb and emptied the contents on the floor in the way of the incoming waitress. In less than a minute, a little dent in the wood floor was created. In less than a minute the waitress' geta sandal tip was caught in the dent, and she tumbled as gracefully like rocks on a cliffside. The food she was going to serve was flung up into the air as she cried out in astonishment. The waitress fell face flat on the dirty floor, landing with a pitiful "Ooph." As quickly as the food and drink (which happened to be soup, hot tea, cream and ricecakes) flew up, it rained back down on her head, coating and smearing the daylights out of her. She was as red as the beets in the soup that littered her hair. All this was observed by the entire tavern, and they exploded into jeering, hearty laughter as the waitress, extremely annoyed, stormed off into the kitchen where she did not intend to come out. Lux laughed hard at the priceless look on the overly capricious waitress. When his laugher all but died out, he turned to face Syeira, his wry smile returning. I didn't happen to like her much.[/blockquote]

Amused was the demoness who now sat across from Lux, by both his bickering thoughts and his antics to pull a few pranks out of his sleeve. She giggled slightly at the waitress, who was as red as a tomato and puffed up like a distressed hen as she flaunted into the kitchen, where she planned to hide and sulk for the rest of her shift, while trying to maintain some semblance of dignity.
As the tavern quieted down to light chats and cheerful gossiping, Syeira herself relaxed as well. Finishing her whole meal, she drank some sake to wash it down before daintily setting it down again. "Oh, I don't believe you're that low of class," She said ponderingly, and added in a blase tone of voice, as if on a side note; "I mean, I don't have a date for tomorrow night's ball, and I guess if you wanted you could accompany me..."
What a tease, little Sy was. She flashed him a dazzlingly crooked smile, her big honey eyes dancing with delight. 'Just don't blow up anything when you're there.'
She added, pushing the thought into his mind. That was another part of her telepathy; not only could she receive thoughts, but she could send them as well as forward them. A few hundred years into the future, they'd probably compare it to emailing.[/blockquote]

Yep, there was no way that dumb waitress was going to come back again. When Lux laughed, it came out sweet and sincere. No snorts, no gags, no weird faces. Just genuine humor. He noticed how Syeira laughed, too. He liked it, and it even made him laugh some more. Eventually, when the people around them returned to their peaceful chatter, he stopped laughing too.
Aheh... He wiped his brow, and then leaned back in his chair casually.
Syeira finished her meal, and gently put down her sake. Lux nearly teetered over the edge of his seat when she told him he wasn't "that low of class." He blinked, the rosiness flushing his cheeks again.
"Wha-really?" He was utterly dumbfounded.
Then she asked him out.
Quirky-Romantic Response in 5...
Lux scrambled to find words; heck, he couldn't make an "eep" or a gasp for air.
4
"Y-you mean it?"
3
He saw her smile flash across her face, smacking him silly. Not to mention he heard her voice warning him not to bring explosives to the ball. He snickered.
2
A flurry of thoughts flashed through his head. What should I wear? What should I get her for a pressie? What time should I be there? Heck! Who's the lord in charge of hosting the ball?
1
"I'd love to accompany you to the ball." He winked back.
"But first, where is it and who's the lord?"
